Role Purpose

Play a key role in the line management and leadership of the laboratory operations, the role of Senior Leather Technician is to ensure that the laboratory day-to-day operations, performance and delivery of a function to the business and service to customers (internal and external) which fully meets the related industry, commercial, customer, operations, production and development trials testing requirements. 


  • The laboratory personnel, processes, plant, and equipment, perform to the highest efficiency and effectiveness of abilities
  • All testing and validation of products to technical specifications meet the defined quality standards & systems required within the specified lead times

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure health, safety, welfare and environment of the laboratory personnel and visitors to environment
  • Laboratory staff line management (advise, guide, direct and discipline reporting) production and development Technicians and Senior Technicians (including temporary, permanent, trainees and apprentice) to ensure test and reporting compliance, conduct and review staff development on a regular basis.
  • Support and act as stand-in, when required and appropriate, for the Laboratory Manager directly in laboratory projects, including cross stakeholder and departmental functional activities and communications, including Lab Team meetings
  • Lead internal and external laboratory-related audits and assessments, including QMS, customer, and certification body
  • Ownership of laboratory operations, problem-solving surrounding tests, and reports arising either internally or externally
  • ISO 17025 compliance, development, and implementation for current, additional, and new equipment, practices, and tests, including Rail 16989/45545 testing and compliance
  • Continuous improvement actions around testing, reporting, professionalism and improved working practices
  • Review lab equipment maintenance, calibration, improvement and advise on new equipment available as required
  • Specifications and test equipment maintenance and calibration, current and new.
  • Identification and direct justification to the Laboratory Manager sourcing and provision of additional internal and external resource (people and plant/equipment) to assist testing where required
  • Statistical data analysis and interpretation using current business packages and investigation of new methods, of lab results, and leading lab independent scrutiny of operations and technical
  • Meeting manufacturing and delivery timescales and KPIs
  • Ensure the review and revision of lab methods and SOPs as required on a regular basis
  • Provide regular (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, 6 monthly and annual) reports to Line Management on lab and staff performance
  • Attend meetings both on and offsite representing the Laboratory Manager and the laboratory team in general
  • Other projects and/or activities as directed by Laboratory Manager and/or Head of Quality and Laboratory
  • The requirement to travel between SLGO sites, customers, suppliers, and other sites, including for external training, is a pre-requisite requirement of this role
  • Ensure all testing is constantly conducted and reported accurately to specified requirements
  • Improve 5S in lab environment and associated activities, maintaining each of the S’s in order

Experience Desired

  • Appropriate Technical and or Leather Qualification, minimum SVQ3, or equivalent
  • Ability to deliver factual, concise reports that can be presented to all levels within both these organisation and external customers
  • Knowledge of, and be prepared to develop in the wider business environment, practices and processes
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience within fast-paced manufacturing and/or testing environment required
  • Laboratory experience in a Quality Control function required
  • Knowledge of business interfaces and engaging with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders
  • High Level of and able to prove IT Skill in MS Packages, Data Analysis, Mini-tab, Power BI
