Job Title:         Fat Plant/AL2 Operator, Scottish Leather Group

Reports to:      TEP Supervisor, Scottish Leather Group

Location:         Bridge of Weir, Scotland

Thermal Energy Plant

Role Purpose

Play a key role in the successful operation of the Thermal Energy Plant by running the Fat Plant, dealing with the flesh waste, monitoring silo, chemical, and power levels, and maintaining all equipment necessary for waste treatment. In addition, ensure that the AL2 operations are followed effectively.

Key Accountabilities

  • Monitor silo levels at B1 by calculating volumes of waste produced, managing any issues that could interrupt the process (blockages, malfunctioning valves) and formulate a strategy with B1 to prepare for potential problems
  • Operate and maintain Fat Plant (3-stage Centrifuge), monitoring and processing materials through the plant, continuously checking levels to ensure there is room to process
  • Maintaining sufficient stream, power, temperature, and pressure levels, adjusting parameters when necessary
  • Check for and deal with blockages within the fat plant, washing out machinery when needed
  • Monitor levels in three tallow tanks, two effluent tanks and one fleshing tank. Manually clearing blockages from tanks and pumping bund when necessary
  • First point of contact for external partners in relation to waste disposal, deliveries, and tanker drivers
  • Provide front line maintenance on machinery within the plant, and refer more complicated issues to the engineer when appropriate
  • Provide support to the engineer, assisting to repair fat plant and other equipment, as and when required
  • Understand reactions and PH balances within AL-2 (Belt filter), changing pump settings dependent on reaction status
  • Safely operate the forklift within the plant
  • Provide support to Water Treatment Plant with forklift duties as well as changing and unloading IBCs
  • Adhere to Health and Safety regulations within SLGO as well as having an awareness of SEPA regulations
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure up to date documentation relevant for audit purposes
  • Effectively utilize SCADA system

Experience Desired

  • Experience of meeting and exceeding health and safety/environmental/workplace organisation requirements
  • Reliable and resilient with the ability to work in a harsh environment
  • Process minded and technically competent regarding process controls, as well as compliance to procedures
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to regularly changing demands
  • Numerate and accurate
  • Experience in a similar role – preferably in a manufacturing/industrial setting
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other in-house applications
